'RADIOPHRENIA' in THE WIRE #374

Issue #374 of The Wire has a nice article about the upcoming Radiophrenia broadcast in Scotland.

Mark Vernon explains the motivation behind behind the temporary FM art radio station, broadcasting live during April:

 "I really like the possibility of accidental listeners spinning through the dial and coming across something completely unexpected. Podcasts and webcasts are all well and good, but people have to deliberately listen to them. Of course there are existing art radio stations like Resonance FM and Sound Art Radio, which are great and I contribute to their broadcasts quite often. But I thought it's about time that Scotland had something similar and this just might be the first stage in that."

 Radiophrenia broadcasts between 13 - 19 April from Glasgow's CCA.

RADIOPHRENIA

Broadcasting live from The Center for Contemporary Arts in Glasgow, Radiophrenia is a temporary FM art radio station - a week-long exploration into current trends in sound and transmission arts. Radiophrenia aims to promote radio as an art form, encouraging experimental approaches to the medium that are not catered for by mainstream stations. Bringing you the best in local and international radio art, the station will be broadcasting 7-days a week, 24-hours a day.

The programme will include; soundscapes, spoken word, documentary, drama, radio experiments, found sound, challenging and radical new programme ideas. The schedule will include live shows and pre-recorded features as well as a series of specially commissioned ‘live-to-air’ performances at 7pm each day. Selected artists have been asked to respond to the unique circumstances of creating a work that is simultaneously a live performance and a radio broadcast, reflecting the fact that there will be an audience present in the theatre in addition to an unseen audience of listeners at home. Commissioned artists include Felix Kubin, The Resonance Radio Orchestra, Peter Lanceley, Shelly Nadashi, Jim Colquhoun, Kathryn Elkin, Nichola Scrutton, Julia Scott and Elizabeth Veldon. Mount Maxwell Radio Reviews 'Shut-Eyed Stories'

 Many thanks to Mount Maxwell Radio for a lovely and thoughtful review of "Shut-Eyed Stories": "Wonderfully perplexing 13-track album based, presumably, on the artist’s own recorded dreams. Cheff’s music sounds vaguely Radiophonic/Ghost Box, while Cheryl Love’s narration is pure BBC. In less capable hands the whole thing could have been a recipe for disaster, but Cheff keeps it interesting by resisting the urge to tie a narrative bow around his dream’s conclusions. Instead, the tracks end much like actual dreams; suddenly, strangely, and inconclusively, with Love’s final utterances hanging in the air like riddles ..." (read more)
