Check this one out. It's a nice mix of music, especially if you're a fan of the Buchla.

INTERVIEW WITH SOUND HISTORIAN PATRICK FEASTER, COMING SOON ON 'ROUGH WINDOWS' on 94.5 FM, KOII
I'm putting the finishing touches on my interview with three-time Grammy nominee Patrick Feaster, the author of Pictures of Sound. Pictures of Sound won the 2013 ARSC Award for Excellence in the Best General Research in Recorded Sound/Best History category and was nominated for a 2014 Grammy Award for Best Historical Album. Patrick spoke to me for nearly an hour about how he located and made audible some of the world's oldest sound recordings. We'll be listening to tracks from the CD that accompanies Pictures of Sound as well. It will be a really special edition of The Rough Windows Radio Hour.

ROUGH WINDOWS RADIO HOUR: 'THE MAN WHO FELL TO FLAGSTAFF' PROGRAM ART

I do a program illustration for each episode of The Rough Windows Radio Hour. This one is for 'The Man Who Fell To Flagstaff.' Curiously, there's no Bowie in the mix -- but there is a full hour of great science fiction-related music from the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Pink Floyd, the Epoxies, Jane Weaver, Peter Howell, Kraftwerk and more. Tune it in at night, around 11 pm, on Radio Free Flagstaff, 94.5 FM, KOII.

COMING UP ON 'THE ROUGH WINDOWS RADIO HOUR' ON 94.5 KOII
Thrift store shopping in Ajo, Arizona yielded these two great finds -- which inspired the theme for an upcoming Rough Windows show. The theme will be "Birds." I'll be featuring some clips from these records, plus a whole hour of electronic music related to our feathered friends. Listen for it on Radio Free Flagstaff KOII.

THE ROUGH WINDOWS RADIO HOUR: "NUMINA" ... WHAT YOU HEARD ON RADIO FREE FLAGSTAFF, 94.5 FM, SUNDAY, OCTOBER 11
Ancient Romans used the word "Numina" to describe the divine spirit of a particular place.
This program was all music intimately connected to a particular place.
The tracks played were:
1. In A Beautiful Place Out In the Country by Boards of Canada
2. New Light At Thornborough by the Xenis Emputae Traveling Band
3. Journeys On The Winds Of Time by Alan Lamb.
4. Children by Tony Schwartz
5. Vihuela and Wolf Pack #1 by Jim Nollman
6. Warminster 4 by The Mt. Vernon Arts Lab
7. Camp 2 - World Music On The Radio by Geir Jenssen
8. Earth's Magnetic Field by Charles Dodge
Some notes on the pieces: the Alan Lamb piece was a recording of the wind vibrating miles of telegraph wires in Western Australia. A very good article on Alan Lamb's work can be found here.
Norweigian Geir Jenssen is better known in the music world by the name Biosphere. In addition to being a composer of ambient electronic music, Jenssen is an accomplished mountain climber. The piece we heard was recorded at the top of one of the highest mountains in the word, Cho Oyu in Tibet. You can learn more about his work here.
It has been said that "Earth's Magnetic Field" by Charles Dodge was actually composed by the planet itself. Dodge created it by mapping data from the Earth's magnetic field data to a four octave span, or 45 notes. The piece was realized using Digital Audio Converters that Bell Laboratories was developing in the late 1950's. You can read more about it here.

SEDONA CREATIVE LIFE CENTER
We saw a wonderful concert at the Sedona Creative Life Center last night.
Nikola Djurica (Clarinetist), David Ehrlich (Violinist), Theresa Ehrlich (Pianist), Thomas Landschoot (Cellist), Steven Moeckel (Violinist), and Nokuthula Ngwenyama (Violinist, Violist) played "Classical Meets Jazz." The performance was part of the Red Rocks Music Festival.
An added bonus was the lovely steeple of the Creative Life Center's chapel, seen above.
